The Treatment For Candida And Prevention Methods
Candida is a yeast which occurs naturally in the human body. It is generally harmless due to its sparse population, however it can grow out of control and become harmful.
Some of the symptoms include: fatigue, sore throat, burning or tingling around genitals, and in some cases memory loss. Candida albicans, as this overgrowth is called, usually occurs because of a compromised immune system or a lack of beneficial bacteria. Thus the treatment for Candida mainly corresponds with these two factors.
One remedy is Acidophilus. When this is taken, by capsule ingestion, it releases acids which create an uninhabitable environment for yeast. Not only will it prevent the spread of the yeast it can also produce hydrogen peroxide which kills the infection outright.
A tablespoon of fiber (ideally containing Guaran or flax seeds) twice a day will also help in the treatment for candida.
Certain essential oils prevent the growth of candida. Oregano and peppermint oils are just two such essentials. Note that when directly ingested, rather than taken Enteric coated, they can be toxic. Always take as a capsule with water in between meals. Several months of this regime is advised in the proper treatment for candida.
Garlic pills are typically prescribed alongside this treatment for candida.
Over the counter medication can also be provided, for both topical and oral treatment. Some serious cases require a visit to the hospital where further IV treatment will ensue. During the illness antibiotics should be discontinued as they will further depreciate the amount of beneficial bacteria in the body.
Perhaps the most important of these remedies is the most obvious, diet. Sugars must be avoided as they feed the growth of yeast, increasing the spread of the candida. So saying, carbohydrate consumption should be drastically limited. Here is a list of do’s and don’ts to follow:
Do’s: Unprocessed meat, chicken, turkey, shell fish, certain nuts, vegetables without starch.
Don’ts: Any refined sugars, fruits (including fruit juices), yeast, gluten, vinegar, peanuts and any peanut related product, pistachios, most cheeses, processed dried smoked or pickled meats, any processed foods, coffee, black tea, cider, root beer.
Water should be consumed frequently as it helps to cleanse the system of yeast. The diet must be followed strictly for the first few weeks, and sometimes even longer depending on the condition of the afflicted. Only once symptoms begin to recede should the ‘don’t’ foods be reincorporated, and even then gradually with special care.
Not a lot can be done in terms of prevention of candida. Keeping hygienic and healthy skin should prevent any infection. Candida is most likely to occur in chemotherapy patients whose immune systems are weak. The use of antibiotics will also increase the likelihood of becoming infected as mentioned before. It can also, though rarely, be contracted sexually, usually by circumcised males with an infected partner.
Here is a list of possible causes of Candida:
1. Frequent use of steroids, antibiotics, or oral contraceptives
2. High sugar diets
3. Excessive smoking
4. Diabetes
5. Pregnancy
These do not always incite infections themselves, but rather contribute to the underlying cause precaution is the best treatment for candida.
